Nokia E66 and E71: New Horizons
SMAPE  News  Nokia E66 and E71: New Horizons

At last there took place an event long awaited by Nokia fans: the two new E-series smartphones were officially announced. The matter concerns Nokia E71 and E66. On the whole the presentation didn’t bring any surprise since their full specs and photos had already long since appeared on the Web.

Nokia E71 is a candy bar smartphone equipped with a QWERTY-keypad and implemented following the best traditions of its Nokia E66i sequel. It has got tinier and sports the thickness of just 10mm. The width of the handset has been also reduced, which makes it easier to hold it in your hand. The truth is, the designers had to sacrifice the screen size at the same time: its diagonal is 2.36” now, whereas Nokia E61 had 2.8”.

The number of QWERTY-keys hasn’t been changed. Their size remains the same as with Nokia E61, but since the width of the handset is smaller, they aren’t well spaced apart. It became easier to input text one handed while not so comfortable to handle it with two hands.

The new gadget is based off the same platform as Nokia E51 and makes use of the Freescale chip operating at a frequency of 369 MHz, which means a higher performance as compared to its predecessor. Among unusual points let’s mention a quality 3.2 Mp camera capable of shooting VGA videos at a framerate of 22 fps with flash.

Both the models’ software is based off the S60 3rd edition FP1 platform, but features a number of qualitative changes as compared to the other handsets running this edition. For instance, you can switch the desktop mode from business to regular and a set of applications showing their info on the active standby screen is customizable for each mode as well as user themes and other specs. Once in standby mode a large clock can be called by pressing the navigation button.

Among other elements of Nokia E71 a 2.3mm headset slot, a microUSB slot for synchronization and an onboard GPS-receiver are also worthy mentioning. Its dimensions being rather small, the handset is equipped with the same 1500mAh battery, which allows it to stay without recharging for about 5 days of moderately extensive usage.
